I am looking for any information to help with the restoration of 2- 71 experimental sleds that I purchased a few years ago. The first machine is an EXT chassis with tag number 1X21 N-P. What I do know about this machine, it is 1 of 2 machines that were built with the JLO 440 free air motor which was supplied to quite a number of manufacturers by JLO for testing but was never picked up for production by any of the snowmobile manufacturers, this chassis was tested with the Solex 40RH carburetors and the second chassis was suppossed to have been tested with Tillotson HD38A carburetors. I have located an NOS JLO 440 and most of the Solex fuel system for this sled.
The Second sled I have is tag number 1X6 N-P and although it currently has a Puma big mouth hood on it, it appears to be an EXT chassis also. I have not been able to track down any information on this machine and it currently does not have a motor or any remains of the fuel system on it.
If anyone can help out with any information on either of these machines it would be greatly appreciated.

There was a sled for sale yesterday at the Waconia Swap with a tag much like you are describing. I should have written it down to compare to yours Terry.

Tom I too have seen a few other machines with the "X" tag, there is a 71 King Kat,72 Puma and 74 ElTigre that are around. Sure would like to find a little more info on these sleds.

A friend of mine was at Waconia Sunday and took a look at the sled I had seen the day previous. This sled seemed to have a 71 Lynx tunnel, tank, dash, etc. The owner currently has a twin F/A in it from a 1971 EXT. My friend did get a look at the serial tag. It reads 1X34 N-P.

Oh yea...one other interesting serial tag from the Waconia event...I saw a 1968 Panther chassis there that had already been sold. The serial on it was 800003, I think (I may be off on the number of zeros). Everything on it seemed pure 1968 Panther. This is the only 1968 Panther tag I have ever encountered that did not begin BP8-xxxxx.

Now that is interesting also, so this may have been the 3rd 68 built? Maybe they were going to make the serial number change in 68 as they ended updoing in 72 but decided against it? That one would have fit nicely into my collection.

I dont have an experimental tagged chassis, although I had the option to buy one a number of years back. I do have a 71 EXT chassis with a wierd "X" stamped.

Jeff
I also have a couple of 71 Ext's with odd stampings on them I will have to take a look at those and share that info also.
